So yesterday I got the pleasure of having an up-close look at an Aston Martin Rapide S. A nice car (don’t like the big stupid grill, though). There was one thing I noticed that I thought was strange, though. For the rear brakes, the disks have what looks like two calipers.

You can see them pretty good here. They’re asymmetrical in size and placement. You have the one normal-looking caliper facing towards the front of the car, and what looks like the second caliper facing a bit upwards towards the rear. I was talking to a buddy of mine about this and we can’t deduce what purpose a second caliper on one disk would serve or if it was even a caliper to start with. Anyone here know what’s up? It’s something I’ve never seen before and I’d like to know.

big one is regular, the small is parking brake. I think all our Aston have them like that

The smaller one is a parking brake.

Very good odds on e-brake caliper. Older Jags with inboard brakes have a normal caliper and a parasitic cable-operated e-brake caliper attached to it, and it would surprise me none if that were what’s going on here in general outline. 1. They can afford to have it that way, 2. the e-brake really ought to be able to stop the car if it has to, 3. the setup probably has very big hub bearings which leave no room for a rotor drum, 4. because British and fuck you, 5. ease of service.

I concur with it being a separate parking brake. The Tesla Model S utilizes this too.
